Feb. 8: First love
You know the feeling. Your mouth goes dry with anticipation, you feel a flutter in your chest, your stomach does flip flops. You’re scared, but drawn to it like a moth to a flame. You’re in love. Sappy, squishy, nonsensical love. It frightens you, it excites you, and some days, it hurts. But somehow, it hurts so good.
We’ve all been there.
There’s nothing like your first love—of derby. There’s just something about roller derby that’s different than all the other sports out there.
It’s ok to love roller derby. She’s a cruel mistress (when you fall on your ass), but she’ll reward you with exhilaration and joy like you’ve never felt. This Saturday, come indulge your love.
In honour of the season, we’ll focus on partner drills. In addition to all the usual roller skating basics (stops, falls, jumps, agility, weaving, etc.), we’ll also look at skating as a wall, blocking in pairs, and other fun roller derby drills. Our sessions are always non-contact, so you can indulge your love, safely. But, fair warning: there may be whips.
For every Raw Meat session, you’ll need to bring roller skates, helmet, mouth guard, and wrist, elbow and knee pads. Please make sure your toe stoppers are white or light colours, and cover black knee pads with vertical strips of white tape, to protect the floors of the venue. If you don’t yet have gear, you can rent everything you’ll need from Rollergirl, at Main
and 11th.
Sessions are $7, and are always drop-in. Please come whenever you can! We meet every Saturday from 5-7 PM at Thunderbird Community Centre, 2311 Cassiar St.
We just have two simple rules: 1. Be safe. 2. Don’t be an ass-hat.
