Oct. 30: Halloween Roller Skating!
Update: We had a fantastic Halloween skate. Astro Boy (far left), was the clear winner of our costume competition, closely followed by Zombie Ref. Our excellent Coach Zombie also did a fine job of representing the Undead. Thank you to everyone who came out, and rocked such fine derby style!
It’s Raw Meat Vancouver’s very first All Hallow’s Eve Eve Roller Skate!
Join us Saturday, Oct. 30, from 7 to 9 at Thunderbird Community Centre, 2311 Cassiar St., for roller skating drills and thrills, and a costume contest. Come in your best derby persona! Vampire derby, undead derby, Barbie derby, drag derby, cute barnyard animal derby. Just no clowns. Clowns are scary.
Prizes will include whatever I can pick up at the dollar store this week. You don’t want to miss out! It’s going to our best skate yet!
This session will be $7. We’re going to have to raise the price a tiny bit until attendance increases, so please, invite your friends.
As always, we require full safety gear, and all sessions are non-contact. Roller skating/roller derby skill drills include:
- Stops and falls: single knee stop, double knee stop, snow plow, t-stop, baseball slide, superman fall
- Agility: crab walks, skating around cones, walking on toe stops
- Proximity skating: weaving through a line of skaters, skating in formation, whips
- Fitness and endurance: monster truck pulls, stretching, 5-minute skates
- And a lot more!
Each session is different, as we mix up various drills and skills. All drills are offered with modifications for beginning skaters, and variations for advanced skaters. All levels of skaters are welcome.
For more information about getting started as a roller skater, read this. We hope to see you at Raw Meat soon!
