Good news, everyone! ABC News finally caught up to us (video here– sorry, it won’t embed)!
Yes, the fastest growing women’s sport in the world, with over 1,400 leagues worldwide (and more coming practically by the minute), and which is under consideration as a possible Olympic sport for 2020, is finally trendy, according to ABC. Don’t you feel validated? It’s also a fantastic workout, very fun, and good for some badass points around the water-cooler come Monday morning. Not to mention that derby is a multi-million doller sport. Hard Dash estimates that skaters alone spend $60 million on their sport each year, not counting fans, refs, bouts, or economic spin-offs.
It might be trendy this year, but Raw Meat Vancouver has been offering roller skating training, derby workouts, and some of the finest people you’ll ever meet since 2010. If you want to get in shape, learn to roller skate, learn about roller derby (but always non-contact!) and have an awesome time, come join Raw Meat this Saturday. All sessions are drop-in, and skaters of all levels, from beginner to expert, are welcome.
What you’ll learn at Raw Meat Vancouver Roller Skating:
We’ll cover the basics of roller skating, including stops, falls, agility drills, skating form, roller skating in proximity with others, a few fun tricks, and some (non-contact) roller derby strategy drills.
All levels of roller skater, including beginners, are welcome. We’ll help beginners learn to skate, and give more advanced skaters some fun drills and games.
What to bring:
You must have roller skates, and all safety gear: knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, helmet, and mouth guard. The venue also requires everyone to use white or light-coloured, non-marking toe stoppers. If your knee pads are black, please cover them with white, non-marking hockey tape. Vertical strips of tape work best. Sessions are $7, and take place every Saturday from 5-7 at 2311 Cassiar St.
The rules:
Raw Meat has two rules: 1. Be Safe, 2. Don’t be an asshat. All sessions are non-contact.
