Hey, I don’t skate with sticks, or chase a puck.
I wait for the ice to come OFF the rinks, not be put on.
My game doesn’t require a Zamboni,
but Zam Bone-y Drive Her sure sounds like a really, really great name.
Our team has a pivot, and there is no goalie.
I block and jam, I don’t stickhandle
And I play a “boutâ€, not a “game’.
I am proud to put panties on my head.
I skate to the inside and outside, not the left and right wings.
There’s a track, not a crease,
A period is 30 minutes, not 20,
and I do hockey stops too, but they are harder on wheels and concrete than blades and ice.
Canada may be the first nation of hockey,
But we are number two in the world in derby!
And we are playing the best sport in the best part of North America.
We play roller derby!
And we are Canadian!
What could possibly be more Canadian than spending the Canada Day long weekend in a curling rink, learning to (roller) skate? Nothing, that’s what. Come join us dressed in your red-and-white best, and be prepared for the most fun you can have outside of a canoe.

About Raw Meat Vancouver Roller Skating
Every Saturday until August 4, Raw Meat will meet at Royal City Curling Club (75 East 6th Avenue, New Westminster) from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM. Starting on August 11, we’ll be back at Thunderbird Community Centre, 2311 Cassiar St., Vancouver, from 5 to 7 every Saturday.
The curling rink floor allows for a full-sized track plus plenty of room for breakout groups to work on specific skills. We only have access to this venue for a few months, so come on out! You will be amazed at how fun and fast this floor is.
All levels of adult roller skaters are welcome at this session, from beginner to advanced. There is no skills requirement for this session. We will focus on basic roller skating skills (stops, falls, agility, proximity) and basic roller derby strategy, with some fun and games thrown in (double knee slide curling, anyone?).
Just learning to roller skate? Don’t be shy! Please come on out to Raw Meat, and we’ll help you learn to roller skate. Don’t hesitate to come to this session if you are an advanced skater, either. We’ll keep it interesting with variations on drills, and lots of fun and games. Besides, we know it’s hard to get out of bed on a Saturday. Now that Raw Meat starts at 12:30, there are no excuses! Come on down!
